What is the difference between exercise therapy and in-home pet care?

Exercise therapy involves providing an increased amount of physical activity in order to improve your pet’s level of physical fitness; in-home pet care involves feeding, administering medication, and allowing your pet the opportunity for a walk outside to urinate and defecate.

What is the usual amount of time allotted for a basic in-home pet care visit?

Each visit on average lasts around 20 minutes; if your pet’s condition requires a longer amount of time, that time will be given at each visit. Additional charges may apply.

What is the amount of time needed for a normal exercise therapy session?

Healthy dogs should be provided with a minimum of three to four 20 minute sessions of moderate physical activity to maintain good health. The first session normally lasts no more than 20 minutes.  If it is determined that your pet enjoys and physically tolerates a more extended exercise period, the session can be lengthened as your schedule permits.

Do I need to be present during my pet’s exercise therapy sessions?

My company is bonded and insured.  Please feel free to ask for references from other satisfied clients!

Is exercise therapy really necessary?

It is easy to overlook the fact that our pets need regular exercise when we are often too busy to assure that we exercise regularly ourselves!   Exercise therapy helps to insure that your pet maintains physical fitness, does not become overweight, and also provides an opportunity to play!

What are the advantages of in-home pet care in lieu of using a boarding facility?

·    Your pet is allowed to remain in a safe environment without strange sights, smells, and sounds.

·    Your pet will not be subjected to the stress of a diet change.

·    Your pet’s normal routine is maintained and medical treatments are provided in a familiar place.

·    Your pet will not be exposed to other animals and the resulting potential of illness or parasite infestation.

·    The trauma of travel is eliminated.

·    Personal attention from a single person that is already familiar with your pet’s needs is provided.

·    You will not feel that you are imposing on friends or neighbors by asking them to care for your pet during your absence, and you will not have to be worried that the caretaker will forget to take care of your pet! The owner will not get upset at having to transport and then leave his/her pet at a boarding facility.

·   Crime deterring measures can be provided, such as turning on and off indoor and outdoor lights, or picking up mail and newspapers, if you desire.

·   Unlike a boarding facility, we charge by the visit, not by the number of pets for which we provide care.

How should I choose a pet care provider?

One of the best ways to find a reputable pet care professional is through your veterinarian. Veterinarians can provide their clients with a reference and discuss the background of individuals specializing in animal care. You may also ask for a recommendation from friends who own pets.  A growing number of people are using pet care services, and most are happy to provide you with the name of a service that they trust.  You should ask your potential pet care provider the following questions:

·    Is he/she insured and bonded, and can proof of the same be provided on request?

·    What is his/her personal experience with animals?

·    Does he/she have a animal medical or training experience?

·    How long has he/she been providing this service?

·    Can he/she maintain a schedule that is compatible with that of your pet?  It is best for your pet to maintain a routine as close to normal as possible.

·    Can he/she provide references?  References are a MUST.  If you own exotic animals, references should be provided for care of that type of animal.  Test the person’s knowledge of your exotic animal by asking questions related to its care.

·    Is a contingency plan in place in the event that the pet care provider becomes unable to care for your animal due to illness or injury?  If such an event were to arise, who would be caring for your pet?   Ask for the opportunity to meet the alternate caregiver.

·    Is the pet care professional willing to bring in the mail and newspapers, water your plants, and turn on and off lights?  Some services will provide for the care of the house at no extra fee.

·    The person you are interviewing should be able to respond to all of your questions without hesitation. You must be able to trust your pet’s caregiver to come into your home and provide care for your animals.  If you feel uncomfortable with the person’s answers to any of these questions, or even if you get a bad feeling, please trust your instincts and find another caregiver.

What animals do we care for?

We love them all!  Dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, and fish, or even horses.  We are experienced in the handling and care of all types.
